07:24 pm - Beowulf So as a lover of literature on the older side of things, and as a former instructor of Ancient myth, I was pretty excited to see Beowulf come to the screen.
However, I was reading AICN review by Harry over there and my enthusiasm sank pretty fast when I read this:
"Let me start at the beginning. When the film starts – I was distracted by the look of the movie… for about 5 minutes. Then, suddenly… as the tormented Grendel begins to be pained by the noisy humans… the loud, inconsiderate, drunk, fornicating braggarts of Denmark… It pains poor Grendel… and he communicates this physically, not in dialogue… and the result is filled with pathos. He’s a tumored, diseased demon creature… some horrid half-breed of man and the supernatural. He turned out twisted and sad… anything, but magnificent – and the pain that human kind causes him in his cave… far far away could not be conceived by those in the valley below."
Um yeah, because that's really what Beowulf is about. Actually, the legend praises civilization and the orderliness of community represented by the Hall where the warriors gathers. It is Grendel who is the wild thing, the loner, the thing of chaos, the thing out of control, disorderliness itself.
So either Harry got it wrong (and actually his reviews aren't my favorite on there) OR the writers etc. for this film have totally screwed up the story and message for the sake of a more exciting tale or something, and the moronic majority of the movie going population.
But people like it because it's a "cool" story and the effects of the animation are awesome...blah blah blah. Current Mood: annoyed

02:12 pm - Why I don't like Gwyneth Paltrow From a Portugese interview:
"I like living here [Great Britain] because I don't fit into the bad side of American psychology. The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans....I love the english lifestyle; it's not as capitalistic as America. People don't talk about work & money, they talk about interesting things at dinner."
Now. I am not going to discuss the issue of intelligence (although, yes, I don't like being called much less intelligent than my friends across the pond)...in my opinion, it's hard to make a comparison because you'd have to generalize too much. So no "well you know it's true" quips in comments. I just think it's kinda rude and as one reporter discussing this said, "biting the hand that feeds her." It's the Americans that buy the majority of tickets to go see her movies!
I just think she's the hugest snob and has got a head the size of Big Ben. :p I can't say anything about her conversations at American dinner tables 'cause I wasn't there but usually my friends and I don't talk about money that often. And when we DO talk about work it's in the context of "how are you doing right now? how was your day" Because work is a part of LIFE and having a conversation that contributes to building a relationship with people is going to include things about LIFE, which includes things about WORK. But perhaps I should think of Paltrow as saying this in the context of HER life in which the concept of work has a different meaning.
I just think, if you want to live in another place 'cause you like it better, fine. But don't do it in a "I'm too smart for youuuuu, so I'm going to go where I belong...with the SMART kids" manner. And don't do it with a fake British accent, either. Current Mood: irritated

12:59 am - This epic Story that every great myth points to. 'We have reached the moment where we, too, must find our courage and rise up to recover our hearts and fight for the hearts of others. The hour is late and much time has been wasted. Aslan is on the move; we must rally to him at the stone table. We must find Gepetto lost at sea. We must ride hard, ride to Helm's Deep and join the last great battle for Middle Earth. Grab everything God sends you. You'll need everthing that helps you see with the eyes of your heart, including those myths, and the way they illumine for us the words God has given in Scripture, to which "you will do well to pay attention...as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts" (2 Peter 1:19).
Yes. Until the day dawns, my friends, and the Morning Star rises in all our hearts.'

12:52 am - On a lighter note, goddess quiz thingy.
Isis Indeed, you are 79% erudite, 66% sensual, 54% martial, and 29% saturnine. |
This Egyptian supreme Goddess is certainly the most influential deity on subsequent cultures. She was the ideal figure of womanhood, usually compared with the Greek Goddess Demeter or her Roman version, Ceres.
Isis was one element of a Holy Trinity, the remaining two figures being her brother and husband Osiris and their heroic son Horus. She was the Goddess of Magic for her brilliance, as well as the Goddess of Love because of her tenacious devotion.
She is often shown with wings, curving to caress coffins and sarcophagi of many a king. In certain papyri she is shown with her falcon wing headdress, covering her ears. One of her sacred symbols is the sistrum, a musical instrument that was believed to ward off evil spirits. Isis' sistrum was carved bearing the image of a cat and was representative of the Moon.
Isis was the High Priestess and an omnipotent magician as well as the only being ever to discover the secret name of Ra. She invariably carries the ankh, the symbol for eternal life. Her name is, by the rules of numerology, adding up to the number “2” and she just so happens to be depicted on the tarot card “Key 2 – The High Priestess”.

02:23 pm - Rita.... about 90% of the residents of southwest Louisiana evacuated the area for Rita. Including my long time friend, Bevyn, whom I've known since I lived in Lake Charles; I called her last night to make sure she was out of Lake Charles and she was-her family had gone to relatives in Baton Rouge.
Although I'm reading reports of damage, it doesn't look to be as catastrophic as Katrina. I think this is due to higher ground and less flooding. It was the aftermath of Katrina that caused so much trouble for her victims.
All the same I hope a lot of the residents' houses are ok after Rita. I read this in an article:
'In Beaumont's nine-story Elegante Hotel, wind blew out massive windows in the hotel lobby, bringing down a chandelier and ripping the roof off another section of lobby.
"We stayed in a stairwell most of the time," said Rainey Chretien, who works at the front desk. "I didn't think it was going to be this bad." '
Ok. Now as an employee of a hotel in a city about 50 miles inland, I can see why you might be required to stay but... "I didn't think it was going to be this bad"????? A natural phenomenon of 120 mph is not going to be that bad???? That's like...that's like standing on the geyser, Old Faithful, knowing what time it's going to come, but not moving when it's about to erupt. You'd probably get blown up into the air and fall to the ground, scalded by the hot water and bones broken by the force. And wonder why the damage was so bad because you didn't think a pressurized forceful natural phenomenon would be this bad.
I'm not picking on this one gal, I just think this is in general bad thinking, underestimating these storms and thinking you can just ride it out! I think it causes a lot of unnecessary risks.
Get. out. of. their. way. Humans vs. Nature on PMS. Nature wins.
